Greys Platinum Review
It has been said that we carp anglers are too fussy when it comes to what our rods look like. It has been suggested that we place more importance on this than their actual performance. I believe that the truth is somewhere in between.
When I saw the Grey’s Platinum 50 carp rod for the first time I was pleased with it aesthetically, it is certainly pleasing on the eye. However, to suggest that it is simply eye candy would be an injustice. This rod is a serious workhorse with allround appeal.
I am certainly not the greatest longdistance caster, but a lot of the time I have not needed to be. This is relevant because I prefer a rod that has a progressive through action. This is how I would describe the Platinum 50s. The addition of the 50mm butt ring (this is where it derives its name) certainly ensures that the line friction during the cast is kept to a minimum. This is a matter of opinion, because I know that some distance casters still argue that larger guides exaggerate the coiling of the line during the cast. I would not profess to be so technical; I simply know that the feel of this rod is pure class. With the distance aspect in mind, Greys has made the tip ring slightly larger, at 14mm. This certainly helps when bulking the main-line diameter with a leader knot. The Platinum rod range incorporates the secure G-Lock reel seat that can be tightened down.
In the days of cut-price carp rods the RRP of £259.99 is expensive, but this is a sound investment. In conclusion, Greys has managed to slightly improve a great piece of kit.
